What to expect of a session
- You need to allow a 'good hour' for a session, generally 75 minutes
- You will need a swimsuit and a towel. Some people prefer earplugs (optional).
- At your first session a health history questionnaire will be completed (or complete it via email beforehand).
- Jennifer will outline the session and answer any questions you may have.
- Once in the water small floats may be placed around your legs to keep them from sinking during the session.
- You will be supported under your head as well as lower back or under knees while being gently moved through the water in a continuous flowing motion. Stretches, pointwork, and massage are added as appropriate.
- Ears are often under the water. Nose and mouth remain above the water.
- Some drift into their own world while other remain aware of everything during a session, both are fine. There is no right or wrong way to receive a Watsu.
- At any stage you have had enough for whatever reason, you can ask to stop (although the opposite usually happens and people want their session to go on and on).
- At the end of the session your practitioner will bring you to an upright stable position and stay with you until you are ready to support yourself. Some people like to sit quietly at the wall, or float in th pool on their own, others like to talk a little about their experience of the session. Either is fine.
- A shower and change rooms are available for after your session. Make sure you haven't planned to big a day as you might just feel like taking it easy the rest of the day.
Modifications
Jennifer can make a myriad of modifications to individualise your session. She has received training in a Aquatic Integration, Healing Dance, Adapted Aquatic Exercise & Swimming, and has taught aquatic exercise courses to individuals with arthritis, MS, and adaptive swimming programmes for individuals with a variety of disabilities. Sometimes it is necessary to start with short sessions if the body is deconditioned or prone to soreness (i.e. fibromyalgia). If you are working with a physio or other health professional and you give Jennifer permission your session can be coordinated to get the best outcome for you. Feel free to discuss your needs with Jennifer in confidence.
